Echos of the Guild: Between the Hatches

While this was an assignment, it was also a passion project. The assignment required us to design a book jacket with specific dimensions and contrast, and to include blocks of text for specific fold sections.

My design stems from an idea I have been toying with for years. A sci-fi novel I have been slowly developing: a transport ship that travels from Earth to the depths of space, using “hatches” suspended in space that connect two distant points light-years apart. This ship is limited by the same principles of travel we know today, but can traverse great swaths of space in the galaxy using these hatches to deliver supplies to colonies on other planets.

For the first stage, I used AI-generated images as the background and cover photo to create the two designs (left and right). Through feedback sessions and further design work, I settled on the design to the right. This one better represented the idea of a hatch that opens to a different part of the galaxy.

Careful curation of typography, scaling, hierarchy, and other design elements resulted in the final design shown below.
