This project started with being invited to a committee meeting to discuss the 2027 Beale Air Show. There had been a contest run to develop ideas for the Air Show badge, and it was returned with a mixture of hand-drawn designs and AI-generated designs.
I was invited to take the submissions and create new, clean artwork that the Air Force could be proud of.
round one
The process started with the main informational element, the badge. All the designs included a badge with the same information: “Forging the Future,” “ Beale Airshow 2027,” and the wings element. I worked through that portion of the design first. The glaring issue was the closeness to the Top Gun logo. After establishing a few working versions, I pushed on to design one. This one came with the request that I clean up the AI version and include properly shaped aircraft.
The second design took inspiration from the other initial designs. Providing the same elements but in a more cohesive and realistic design.
The last design was inspired by the catchphrase, “Forging the Future.” As the future moves into microchips, it speaks to the essence of the design and the future of aircraft and tech.
round two
Round one was received with great feedback. The committee liked the designs, but resonated with the first two. They asked for minor changes: in design one, the bottom aircraft was too large; the three aircraft at the top were too close; and they requested a different aircraft shape for one of them.
In the second design, they requested that the bottom aircraft be rearranged to show levels of importance.
Feedback on the badge was that the text for “Forging the Future” was too small and should be larger for ease of reading, and the year text was too large.
